V.I. Agriculture and Food Fair Opens Friday on St. Croix
Opening ceremonies for the 35th annual Agriculture and Food Fair of the Virgin Islands are scheduled for 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17, at the Fair Grounds just north of UVI's St. Croix campus. The fair, which continues through Feb. 20, is jointly sponsored by the V.I. departments of Agriculture and Tourism and UVI's Cooperative Extension Service. The fair web site is www.viagrifest.org .
TJF Committee to Take Campaign to Agriculture and Food Fair
The Tom Joyner (TJF) School of the Month Events Committee on St. Croix will participate in the ag fair. In addition to conducting games on the Old School-New School theme, committee members will sell tickets for a 50/50 raffle. The raffle drawing will take place on Monday, Feb. 20.
O'Jays to Fill Reichhold Center With Soul Sounds on Saturday, Feb. 18
The O'Jays, one of the most popular soul music groups of the past 30 years, will perform at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18, at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts. Tickets are still available for the $48 and $36 seats. Reichhold ticket outlets include: the UVI Bookstore, Krystal & Gifts Galore (Tutu Park), Parrot Fish (Back Street), Modern Music (Havensight), Connections (St. John) and the Reichhold Center Ticketing Office at 693-1559. Tickets are also available via the Internet at www.reichholdcenter.com.
Basketball Bucs to Continue ODI Play on Feb. 17 and 18 in Puerto Rico
UVI's men's and women's basketball teams continue ODI league play in Puerto Rico on Friday, Feb. 17, when the Buccaneers face Politecnica. Friday's women's game begins at 6 p.m., with the men playing at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, Feb. 18, the Bucs take on University del Este (UNE). Game times are 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., respectively. The Buccaneers' remaining schedule is featured on the Athletics Calendar on the UVI Athletics Department's web site.
Students, Faculty, Staff Eligible for Intramural Basketball on St. Thomas
UVI will offer an organized intramural basketball program on the St. Thomas campus beginning at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17. The program is free. It emphasizes fun and team sportsmanship. All currently enrolled students, faculty and staff are welcome. League champions will receive official UVI intramural t-shirts and have their names engraved on the winners' plaque to be displayed in the trophy case in the Sports & Fitness Center. Team captains and interested players should contact Prof. Erik Heikkila at the Sports and Fitness Center room 227 or call 693-1213.
Virgin Islands Field Guide Now Available by Mail Order
UVI's newly published Virgin Islands field guide – Island Peak to Coral Reef: A Field Guide to the Plant and Marine Communities of the Virgin Islands is now available by mail order. A new web site about the guide can be found in the "Latest Links" section of the UVI home page – www.uvi.edu – or at this: direct link. The web site describes the contents of the 214-page guide, offers sample pages, lists Virgin Islands news stands that carry the guide and includes a convenient mail order form. The guide costs $20. Shipping and handling is an additional $5.
Basic Boating Course Still Accepting Students
There is still time for interested Virgin Islands boaters to improve their skills in the Basic Boating Course now being taught by Captain Tom McCoy. The U.S. Power Squadron course meets on Tuesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. at UVI's Small Business Development Center Training Facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. The course covers the fundamentals of safe boat handling and operation, and basic piloting in one comprehensive classroom course. Newly revised, the course includes a digital chart training CD and instructional material on modern navigation techniques.
Although the current course began on Feb. 7, McCoy said there is still time and room for additional students. Anyone interested is advised to contact McCoy directly at 774-2715 to obtain course materials and books as soon as possible. The course is free. Materials (including a book and CD) cost $50. McCoy notes that the course is accepted for boat licensing requirements in 38 states and Puerto Rico and legislation is pending to accept it in the Virgin Islands.
