VI High School Students Begin Summer of Science at UVI
Twenty-five Virgin Islands high school students arrive on UVI's St. Thomas campus today (Monday, June 19) to begin the University's annual Summer Science Enrichment Academy (SSEA). The six-week program will use classroom sessions, presentations from working professionals, discussion groups and field trips to explore the theme of emerging health and environmental issues. Participants will live in the St. Thomas campus' North Dorm. Program Coordinator Adam Quandt, who is in his fifth year with SSEA, said most participants are interested in health related careers. The students will focus on biology, mathematics, chemistry and English (as it relates to scientific writing).
The program is funded by UVI's Health Careers Opportunity Program with support from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Health Resources and Services Administration. UVI to Host Conference on Urban and Caribbean Forests
UVI will host the 11th annual Caribbean Urban and Community Forestry Conference on St. Croix from today (June 19) through June 22 at the Carambola Beach Resort. The theme of the four-day conference is Island Forests: The Urban and Natural Interface. Experts in urban forestry from the U.S. mainland, Puerto Rico and throughout the Caribbean will be in attendance. The conference is sponsored by UVI's Cooperative Extension Service, the UVI Agricultural Experiment Station, the V.I. Department of Agriculture, the V.I. Department of Tourism and the USDA's Forest Service/International Institute of Tropical Forestry. TSA Recruiters to Visit St. Thomas Campus on June 20
Recruiters from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will visit UVI's St. Thomas campus from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 20. TSA has positions open for security officers at Cyril E. King International Airport. Starting, part-time pay is $13.85 per hour. Summer Session I Classes End on June 20
UVI's Summer Session I classes will end on Tuesday, June 20. Final exams are scheduled for June 20.
Summer Session II Registration Continues Online Through June 21
Online registration for students wishing to take classes during UVI's Summer Session II is available now through June 21. Summer Session II classes will run from Friday, June 23, through July 28. UVI Board of Trustees to Meet June 24 on St. Thomas
The Board of Trustees of the University of the Virgin Islands will meet at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 24, at the Sports and Fitness Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus. The meeting will convene with regular session agenda items beginning with the President's Report, which will include highlights of major University accomplishments since the previous board meeting.
