'Take Back the Night' March Now Scheduled for Thursday

Oct. 23, 2006 — The Women's Coalition of St. Croix would like to send a reminder to the community that the domestic violence march "Take Back the Night," postponed because of inclement weather, will take place Thursday Oct. 26, beginning promptly at 6 p.m.
"The march is definitely on this Thursday," said Clema Lewis, coalition co-director. "Even if we have to bring umbrellas." Lewis asked that all members of the community come out to join the event. The event starts at the Frederiksted Fish Market and ends at Buddhoe Park with a short ceremony, Lewis said.
Organizers have dedicated the march to Petra Warren, a 1985 victim of domestic violence. Every year the march is dedicated to a community member — male or female — victimized by domestic violence.
"We want her family to know that we remember her," Lewis said.
The ceremony following the march will highlight heroes of domestic-violence awareness in the community. Honors will go to Pastor Will Woods of Altona Baptist Church and Pastor Robert Wallace of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church for their continued efforts to educate their respective church communities about the ills of domestic violence. Organizers will also honor attorney Cynthia Moore of Legal Services of the V.I. Moore has "gone above and beyond the cause to assist victims of domestic violence," Lewis said.
Moore will also speak at the coalition's movie night Wednesday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m. in UVI's Cafetorium. The event will educate participants on the ills of domestic violence and its effects on children. The event is called "Why Do Batterers Who Abuse Women Get Their Children?" and will showcase two highly acclaimed documentaries.
All of the previous events scheduled for Domestic Violence Awareness month have proven successful, Lewis said. The events have been "kind of fun," she said, and encourage families, church organizations and senatorial candidates to continue to support the activities the coalition has planned for the remainder of the month.
Activities on St. Croix for Domestic Violence Awareness Month:
Oct. 25 — Movie Night, UVI Cafetorium
Oct. 26 — Take Back the Night March
Oct. 28 — Shelter "Wish List" Project held at Kmart West and Plaza Extra East
