Hotel and Tourism Association Seeking Toys for Christmas

Dec. 6, 2006 — Tis the Season for Christmas trees, poinsettias, guavaberry and giving to kids who otherwise may not receive any gifts.
For six years, the USVI Hotel and Tourism Association has sponsored a toy drive among its members, collecting gifts for the young people of the Boys and Girls Club of St. Thomas. This year the number of kids at the club has almost doubled, so community donations are welcomed to ensure that every child receives a gift.
About 80 percent of the kids dont even have a Christmas tree, so no traditions are created and the spirit of the season is absent," said Jacqueline Brown, acting unit director of the Boys and Girls Club. "This annual donation helps them understand the meaning of giving and sharing, and our hearts are always warmed by the generosity.
The Boys and Girls club conducts after-school programs where children can receive assistance with their homework. Computers are also available to use for school projects such as book reports, and Internet access is available with adult supervision. The club also serves as a place to have fun with sports and games.
Donations can be dropped off at the association office on Raphune Hill from now until December 20. Gifts should include an age range and whether it should be presented to a girl or boy.
For more information, contact the office at 774-6835.
