UVI Orientation Schedules Available Online; Late Registration Set Jan. 10-12
The University of the Virgin Islands Spring Semester classes begin on Thursday, Jan. 11, 2007. Orientation for new students began on Sunday, Jan. 7, with new matriculated student advisement and registration scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 9. Late registration for continuing students will be available from Jan. 10 through 12. Complete orientation schedules are available on the UVI web site – www.uvi.edu. Detailed schedules can be accessed from the "Academics" page and the "Student Life" page.

UVI Counseling Services Now Offers Confidential, On-line Screening
UVI's Counseling Services Office is now offering confidential, on-line screening for alcohol, depression, anxiety and post traumatic stress conditions for UVI students. The service is available free of charge to UVI students. Screening features a short, confidential questionnaire that may be accessed from the "Student Life" page of the UVI web site – www.uvi.edu. The questionnaire is also available from this link. For details, visit the Counseling and Placement Offices on the St. Thomas or the St. Croix campuses. Award-Winning Systems Ecologist to Present Seminar at UVI
Dr. Charles A. S. Hall, an award-winning systems ecologist who has written seven books and 200 scholarly articles, will present a talk at the University of the Virgin Islands' MacLean Marine Science Center at noon, on Friday, Jan. 12. The seminar will be videoconferenced to Evans Center room 302a on the St. Croix campus. Dr. Hall is a professor in the College of Environmental Science and Forestry at the State University of New York. His seminar is titled: "The use of tropical environmental gradients to test Howard Odum's maximum power hypothesis." He will examine the use of strong gradients in elevation to test fundamental ideas in ecology. A question and answer session will follow. This presentation is part of the VI-EPSCoR's 2006-07 Seminar Series which is designed to exemplify how research of the Caribbean marine and terrestrial environment can be of importance to the Virgin Islands and its people. Boston University Early Medical School Program Presentation Set Jan. 19 at UVI
Virgin Islands high school students with interests in medical school careers are invited to attend a lecture by Dr. Jonathan Woodson, MD, associate dean for students and minority affairs at Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Woodson will discuss BU's Early Medical School Selection Program from noon to 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 19. The lecture will take place in Chase Auditorium (B-110) on UVI's St. Thomas campus, with a video conference link to the Theatre (EC-401) on the St. Croix campus. Student interviews with Dr. Woodson on Jan. 19 may be arranged by contacting Amanda Wright at 693-1238 by Jan. 16. Students in the BU program attend UVI, and spend two summers and their senior year in Boston.

Angélique Kidjo to Discuss World Music in Videoconferenced Forum at UVI
UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts and the African Association of St. Thomas-St. John will present "An Evening with International World Music Star Angélique Kidjo" at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 11. Kidjo will discuss her extensive career on the world stage, as well as the impact of African music on music of the Caribbean and Latin America. Moderators for this forum include UVI Humanities Professor Gene Emanuel and Dr. Solomon Kabuka, president of the African Association. The forum will take place in Chase Auditorium (B-110) on UVI's St. Thomas campus. St. Croix students and residents can participate in the Evans Center Theater (EC-401) on UVI's St. Croix campus. EMET Scholarship Application Deadline is January 16, 2007
UVI students majoring in computer science, mathematics or engineering, with a minimum GPA of 2.8, are eligible to apply for the Emerging Mathematics, Engineering and Technology (EMET) Scholarship program. Qualified students can receive scholarships of up to $3,125 per year. To be considered, students must complete an online application form at this web link http://ecs.uvi.edu/csems.html. Applications are also available at the Science and Mathematics office for a paper application. The application deadline is Tuesday, Jan. 16. Applications can be emailed, faxed, mailed or hand delivered to the Emerging Caribbean Scholars (ECS) office of the Division of Science and Mathematics. Little Theatre Sets Auditions for Spring Production of 'Caribbean Babylon'
The UVI Little Theatre has announced that auditions for its Spring production of "Caribbean Babylon" will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 16 and 17, 2007. Auditions will be held in the Little Theatre, located in the Classroom Administration Building on UVI's St. Thomas campus. "Caribbean Babylon," written by St. Thomas native Gus Edwards, is set on St. Thomas in the 1950s, not long after large-scale tourism became a major economic and cultural force. Seven actors are needed: five black actors (four men and one woman) and two white actors (one man and one woman). The play will run on March 2 through 5 and March 9 through 11. Courses on Project Design, Evaluation Slated for St. Croix, St. Thomas
Two-day courses in project design and evaluation will be presented by the NOAA Coastal Services Center on St. Croix and St. Thomas. The courses are designed to help management, education, outreach and research professionals to design and implement projects that have measurable impacts on their target audiences. The course will be held on St. Croix on Jan. 29 and 30 in room 133 in the UVI Research and Extension Center on the St. Croix campus. On St. Thomas, the course will be offered on Feb. 1 and 2 at the UVI Small Business Development Center at Nisky Center. Course hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in both locations. The courses are sponsored by the V.I. Resource Conservation and Development Council (VI-RC&D) in partnership with the UVI Cooperative Extension Service. The course fee is $50.
