Renowned Area Photographer Opens School for Shutterbugs

Feb. 9, 2007 — St. John photographer Steve Simonsen has branched out with his St. John School of Film and Photography, which will offer workshops on a variety subjects.
Class work is done at Gifft Hill School, with additional work done mainly in locations within V.I. National Park.
For example, a course offered Saturday is entitled Beyond the Automatic Settings. Simonsen, who began offering courses in January, said it's aimed at people who've bought a digital single-lens reflex camera and now want to know how to get the most out of it. "They're miffed by the lengthy instruction manual," he said.
He said that after course work at Gifft Hill School, participants will head to the North Shore Road. "They'll put into practice what they've learned," Simonsen said. Other offerings will include a 16-week video editing workshop, using iPhoto software, travel photography and more.
He said that workshops will run through spring, but he plans to resume them in the fall.
Simonsen's work (See On Island Profile: Steve Simonsen) appears regularly in Caribbean Travel and Life. He's one of the area's best-known photographers and sells regularly to numerous top-notch magazines.
His photos have appeared in National Geographic Explorer, National Geographic Adventurer, Islands magazine, at a Kodak photo exhibit entitled Planet Ocean, in numerous pieces for the V.I. Tourism Department and in various other local, regional and national publications.
Simonsen's book, Living Art, graces coffee tables around the world.
Visit the school's website for more information or call Simonsen at 775-4485.
