Carlson and Murphy Open at Mango Tango

March 29, 2007 – Mango Tango Art Gallery unveils the exhibition "Luminous" from 5:30-8:30 p.m., on Friday, March 30. The show will present the oil and acrylic paintings of Kathy Carlson and the oil paintings of Brian Murphy. Enjoy the interpretive blues tunes of 2 Blue Shoes at the champagne reception. Carlson works on canvas and Murphy works on hardboard and canvas. The show represents a year of planning, sketching, and painting for each artist. The main preoccupation of Carlson and Murphy is light. Carlson's figures and flowers are intensely illuminated artistic achievements. Murphy pays close attention to the shifting patterns of light and shade across land and water.
Carlson offers a wide range of subjects from historical paintings, to floral compositions, to mythological images. When she paints island life, she often tries to capture musicians, dancers, farmers, and sailors, painting them in a historical context.
Brian Murphy says that his paintings are his voice. "My approach comes from the study of past masters, the influence of present-day painters I admire, and a direction that has developed from deep inside me. What I enjoy about painting out of doors is that the setting speaks to me through a particular light at each particular time of day," he said. His technique is to paint parallel lines, contrasts, breaks and connectives that unite in common pattern elements. Basically he fuses forms in space. The works painted outside are usually small due to the constraints of nature. Murphy finds hardboard to be the best support. He then takes the small works into his studio. Some that were done on the spot are reworked on larger canvas.
