Eugene Petersen Wants to Be a Delegate

May 26, 2007 – I am a candidate for delegate to the 5th Virgin Islands Constitution Convention. I was born in Frederiksted and attended St. Patrick’s, Claude O. Markoe and Christiansted High Schools. I graduated in the first graduating class of St. Croix Central High School in 1968 and attended Tuskegee University. I received a Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science in 1972 and Doctorate Degree in Veterinary Medicine in 1975.
I worked in Boston, Massachusetts as a small animal practitioner and returned home in 1976 to practice at the Crago Animal Clinic. I subsequently purchased that Clinic and operated it until 1999. In 1995, I entered into a new business as a partner, became president of the corporation and held that position until my retirement in 2003.
Currently, I serve on the Board of Directors of the WTJX Public Broadcasting System and the Board of Veterinary Medicine for the territory. I also serve on the Board of Directors of the Frederiksted Economic Development Association (FEDA) and the Board of Directors of Island Center for the Performing Arts. I volunteer my services as Executive Director of the Center as well.
As an aspirant for delegate, I want to work with a team to produce a fair, equitable and functional constitution for all of the people of the United States Virgin Islands. We need a constitution that requires openness of the conduct of the peoples’ business and finances; a constitution that will hold all elected officials accountable to their oath of offices and a constitution that will survive the challenges of time.
Virgin Islanders are a diverse group; we encompasses many races and ethnicities and our constitution must be broad based, free of special interest and fair to all.
I acknowledge that there will be some delegates championing specific issues. However, a constitution cannot be created, promulgated, or survive on any one issue, and no single issue should be allowed to be the death knell of this document. This constitution must be conceived on the premise of fairness, balance, a functional and open government and broad enough to survive the changes of time. Our founding fathers have done this before and we can do this now.
I have the business and life experiences that will allow me to work with others, negotiate and make decisions that are in the best interest of the people of the United States Virgin Islands. I have been very successful and a very active individual in my community. I am a candidate for delegate because I am committed to serve and will take my responsibilities seriously.
I keep in touch with our people by serving them in many community and non profit organizations. I know the issues and will continue to work towards a better Virgin Islands. I ask you, the people of St. Croix for your vote for my candidacy.
I want to be one of your 13 district delegates. A Delegate in whom you can place your trust to work for a brighter future of our islands.
Vote: Dr. Eugene A. Petersen
Delegate, 5th Constitution Convention
