St. Thomas Cancer Survivor Honored at Oklahoma Ceremony

July 10, 2007 — There is a tree growing in Oklahoma today with St. Thomas roots: Five-year cancer survivor Carol Tuohy was honored last month at the Cancer Centers of America Southwestern Regional Medical Center in Tulsa, where she received treatment.
Joining Tuohy in a tree-planting ceremony and luncheon in her honor were doctors, her clinical support team and Linda Armstrong Kelly, mother of seven-time Tour de France winner and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong.
"Following my diagnosis of breast cancer and treatment options that didn't consider my needs, I saw a commercial for CTCA and decided this was where I needed to get treatment," Tuohy said.
Kelly was the keynote speaker at this year's Celebrate Life event in Tulsa. She said she was "thrilled to celebrate with Carol," according to a CTCA news release: "The medical industry is making incredible advancements in research and treatment options each and every day."
Kelly raised Lance single-handedly and was the driving force in encouraging Lance to fulfill his destiny after he was diagnosed with Stage 4 testicular cancer, the release said.
Earlier this year, the National Mother's Day Committee named Kelly Outstanding Mother of the Year for 2007.
