Brief: Temporary Tattoo Ingredients May Cause Allergic Reactions

July 30, 2007 — People getting temporary tattoos using henna products that contain added ingredients should exercise caution, said Acting Health Commissioner Dr. Marc Jerome.
“Normally, henna produces a brown, orange-brown, or reddish-brown tint, but other ingredients must be added to produce other colors, such as those marketed as ‘black henna’ and ‘blue henna,’ and can cause health problems such as allergic reactions,” according to a news release from the V.I. Department of Health.
