Duathlon Category Added for Love City Triathlon

Aug. 15, 2007 — Athletes across the territory and beyond are getting ready for the 9th annual Love City Triathlon, which for the first time will have a duathlon category for those put off by a dozen miles up and down St. John's hills.
It runs Sept. 2.
The duathlon "is mainly designed for people who don't have bikes or who haven't trained that much," Jude Woodcock, a member of the organizing committee, said Wednesday.
The event starts at 7 a.m. with half-mile swim at Maho Bay, the beach that sits along the North Shore Road. The 12-mile bike segment runs from Maho Bay along the North Shore Road through Cruz Bay and onto Centerline Road. At King Hill Road, riders head downhill to Annaberg Plantation.
The triathlon concludes with a four-mile run in the vicinity of Annaberg for those participating in all three legs of the event. Those only joining in for the duathlon will face a 3.1-mile run to finish at Annaberg.
Last year, St. Maarten resident Dick Luttekes won for the third time and St. Croix resident Theresa Harper for the second time.
Woodcock said that she doesn't expect Luttekes and other St. Maarten athletes to attend this year.
"This means there will be a nice shakeup in the men's field," she said.
She said Harper is planning to participate, but has suffered from injuries. Woodcock said that if she tackles the duathlon instead of the triathlon, she'll provide some stiff competition.
Woodcock urged people to come to cheer the athletes on.
"There are some nice-looking bodies out there," she said, laughing
Registration runs through Sept. 1. A pre-race meeting at Maho Bay Camps starts at 4:30 p.m. Sept. 1. That will be the last chance to register. There is no race-day registration.
Registration forms are available at Connections in Cruz Bay, St. John, Stamina Sports in Golden Rock, St. Croix, and Caribbean Surf Co. at Havensight Mall on St. Thomas.
Entries are $30 per individual, and $25 per person for relay teams.
Maho Bay Camps is offering a free stay on the night before the race, Sept. 1, to all participants. Call Maho at 776-6226 to make a reservation.
A picnic at Francis Bay Beach will follow the event for participants and volunteers.
Woodcock said volunteers are still needed for myriad tasks. To volunteer, call Karen Brady at the Friends of V.I. National Park at 779-4940.
