Brief: Acting Education Commissioner Appoints Chief of Staff

Aug. 31, 2007 — Acting Education Commissioner Lynn Spampinato has appointed Wynant Watty-Benjamin to serve as her chief of staff.
Benjamin, who will report directly to the commissioner, will be primarily responsible for the management of the day-to-day operations of the Commissioner’s Office, oversight of central office staff and coordination of various leadership and state level activities, according to a news release from the Department of Education.
The new chief of staff holds a master of business administration from the University of the Virgin Islands and a bachelor of arts degree in humanities/secondary education from the then College of the Virgin Islands. She is currently a doctoral candidate with Capella University, working toward a degree in organizational management/human-resource management.
Benjamin “possesses a strong background in administration, as she has managed large, multi-faceted staffs and is an organization guru,” Spampinato said, according to the release. “As the special assistant, she was responsible for developing procedures, performing research and managing all accounts within the Commissioner’s Office. She often handled inquiries and complaints received from internal divisions, external agencies, parents, and organizations, and was instrumental in the development of executive reports to the governor, regulatory and other agencies.”
