Jan. 13, 2008 — Public school students on St. Croix will get the day off Monday and students in the St. Thomas-St. John district will have Tuesday off, as teachers and school staff attend a departmental symposium on issues affecting student learning.
Education spokeswoman Juel Anderson said the time off for teachers is a "professional day." Noted education consultant Willard Daggett will be the featured speaker at the symposium which is jointly sponsored by the St. Croix Foundation.
This will be Daggett's second time addressing V.I. educators. He was in the territory last March where he spoke to a receptive audience, primarily educators. Daggett is known as a leading force in public education reform and is president of the International Center for Leadership in Education.
The symposium will be from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Educational Complex on Monday and the Bertha C. Boschulte Junior High School on Tuesday.
Daggett will discuss developing 21st Century literacy in students, rigor and relevance for all students and the challenge of preparing them for a changing world.
