Parade Marks Start of Little League East Action

Feb. 25, 2008 — Alvin McBean Little League East kicked off its 2008 season over the weekend with a musical parade that stopped traffic and wound its way up from Four Winds Plaza to the McBean Ballpark.
Heading up the parade were the Charlotte Amalie High School's Marching Hawks, whose flag team waved colorful blue and gold flags, while members of the band — accompanied by the booming of the school's famous drumline — belted out tunes that rang through the parade route and captured the attention of passing motorists.
Dressed in orange, members of the St. Thomas Majorettes — followed later by the Charming Twirlers — threw their batons up in the air and danced up the street. In the middle, dressed in their team's colors, marched the little leaguers, who smiled and waved all the way to the ballpark.
Speaking before the weekend's games got under way, league President Darryl Smalls joined parents and supporters in welcoming each player onto the field. Despite the challenges the league faces this year — such as deteriorating facilities and the need for more funds to support expenses — Smalls said he expects the 2008 season to be "exciting" and well-played.
Teams participating in the league this year are the Falcons (with three teams, competing in both the junior and senior divisions), the Rock Starz (the league's 2007 champions), the Blazers, the Reds, the Sox and the Jack Spanyas.
