Mango Tango Presents 'Our Reflective Consciousness': The Work of Grant and Sternberg

April 6, 2008 – Mango Tango Hillside Art Gallery begins Art Soirees on three Tuesdays in April, beginning April 8 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The featured artists are Derrick Grant and Ed Sternberg, who have been exhibiting at Mango Tango for three years. Grant is a digital artist and Sternberg is a photographer. Together they present "Our Reflective Consciousness."
Grant is the only artist represented by Mango Tango who uses his computer to share his vision. His current oeuvre deals with water relationships. Some of the factors networking with this fluid will include light, sun, soil texture and humans.
"As an artist I bring both my scientific background (anatomy and cell biology) as well as education in art and fuse these concepts in a novel and innovative way. My art borrows elements from Renaissance art and surrealism and these essential concepts are then combined using computers and traditional painting to give birth to a revolutionary approach to visual interaction with the canvas. I consider myself a digital painter that uses the computer as a tool to enhance the standard paint medium to include intense colors and reflective surfaces so that the viewer of the art piece enters the story illustrated on canvas," Grant said.
Sternberg creates stability between aesthetics and information. He presents dramatic angles, lines, colors, textures and shapes to generate an emotional response. Whether he engages the viewer with the enchantment of reflection in water and glass or simply records a moment in time, he deftly captures light and shadow.
"I'm constantly looking for the pictures hidden inside the visual composite of everyday life; the scenes and vignettes that at first glance are mundane or even invisible but take on a life of their own when they are isolated by the eye of the camera," Steinberg said.
Meet Grant and Sternberg at the champagne reception at the original Mango Tango Art Gallery on Raphune Hill. Also, enjoy the interpretive blues of 2 Blue Shoes.
