New Police Sergeants Called On To Lead

Aug. 6, 2008 — Leadership was the key word from government officials Wednesday at the promotion ceremony in Superior Court on St. Croix for four new sergeants in the V.I. Police Department.
"Your chance to be a leader starts as a sergeant," said Police Commissioner James McCall. "Give the troops the tools and training to go out and serve the community."
McCall urged them to continue to evolve, learn and study. He also reminded the sergeants of the department's partnership with the University of the Virgin Islands for officers to get criminal justice degrees free.
"You have decided to lead and not just participate," said Gov. John P. deJongh Jr. "Look for opportunities to lead."
DeJongh said one of their biggest challenges would be the issue of credibility.
"This places you in a leadership position," said Oakland Benta, acting St. Croix chief of police. He told the sergeants they are expected to lead, influence and guide colleagues.
Witnessing the ceremony, presided over by Judge Julio Brady, were more than 50 people including police personnel, officials, friends and families of the new sergeants.
"I know he will make a good leader as a sergeant," said Keisha Liburd, herself an officer and the fiancée of Sgt. Leslie E. Williams. "He wanted this promotion for a long time." She added he will make a good husband too.
"I'm ready for the new leadership challenge," said Williams. "This promotion feels good."
Sgt. Anthony Hector's parents and young daughter beamed with pride during the ceremony. "I pray for God to protect and guide him to be honest in everything he does," said Hector's mom, Cordina Hector.
Even the closing benediction had the message of leadership. "Lead," said Isaac James Schaeffer, pastor at Father's House Christian Center, "with courage, character and caring."
Also promoted Wednesday Sgts. Mirrett F. Benta and Patricia E. Stevens.
