Brief: Illegal Immigrants Leave Boat Behind

Aug. 22, 2008 — No trace was found of the illegal immigrants who arrived earlier this week at remote Brown Bay on St. John, but hikers found their boat pulled up at the bay.
The hikers called V.I. National Park rangers, who towed the boat to the bulkhead at the park's Visitors' Center. The Mercy Jesus, about 28 feet long, held an unknown number of illegal immigrants, but they left behind evidence of their trip.
"We found a Netherlands Antilles coin," said Park Ranger Dave Horner.
Rangers also found plastic bags filled with clothes and clothes scattered along the trail.
One of the two motors was damaged, and Horner said it looked like it was "dinged up" going over a reef.
Brown Bay and other isolated North Shore beach locations are often spots where illegal immigrants are dropped off. The hiking trail and surrounding areas are often littered with clothing left behind by the illegal immigrants.
