Poetry @ Your Library to Be Part of 275th Anniversary of Christiansted

The Friends of St. Croix Public Libraries invite the community to a grand Poetry @ Your Library event at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 27, at the Florence Williams Public Library. This event is in commemoration of the 275th anniversary of the town of Christiansted, 1735 – 2010. This will be an open-mike session whereby students and persons from the community in general will be invited to read poems written about Christiansted town. The poems should be written following the theme, “Christiansted: A Reflection on Our Past – A Commitment to Our Future.”

Poets may consider the following in developing their poem: What have been some of the highlights of the town over the last 275 years? Immigration/Migration; Business; Housing; Historic Buildings; Population
1) What happens in Christiansted?
2) How has the face of town changed over the last 275 years?
3) Christiansted then, and now.
4) A walk along the streets of Christiansted, what do they tell?
5) What is a town? What makes a town?
6) Christiansted today –historic buildings, historic places, business, homes, people…churches, schools, graveyards, bars(rum shops), houses of ill repute (prostitution), homeless, drug addicts,the mentally challenged, dilapidated houses (rundown buildings)
7) Christiansted – some of the people who live/d here… Walter Pederson, Arnold Golden, Ruth Harrigan, Alejo Rojas, McAlpin, Benjamin, Luis Olivencia, Petersen, Codrington, Solomon, Calderon, Ebbesen, Titi Perez, Knight, Simon, Diaz, Sam Bough, Iris Brown, Olaf Henneman.
8) What story do church records or graveyards tell?
9) The Life and Times of Christiansted.
10) Happy Birthday Christiansted!
11) Christiansted: A Walk Down Memory Lane, 1735-2010
12) Christiansted 3010!
To register please fill out the attached form, submit a copy of your poem, a biography and a picture via e-mail, for inclusion in the booklet by Wednesday, May 19, to zoraidajacobs@yahoo.com . For further information, call 773-1095, ext. 7045 at the Department of Education, send a fax to 773-1545, or stop by the Florence Williams Public Library in Christiansted or the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library in Frederiksted.
