The victim of a vicious domestic violence attack Saturday died while in treatment for her injuries at about 2 p.m. Wednesday at an off-island hospital, the V.I. Police Department reported Thursday.
The name of the victim is still being held pending the arrival of family members to St. Croix.
According to St. Croix Police Chief Oakland Benta, once the police receive the medical report stating the woman’s death was directly caused by the assault, the suspect, 45-year-old Timothy D. Rodney, will be rearrested on upgraded charges of first-degree murder.
Rodney was arrested Saturday and charged with first-degree domestic violence. He is accused of assaulting his ex-wife with a fire extinguisher, causing serious injuries.
According to a news release from the police department, the assault took place in the Cane Bay area at 1:21 a.m. Saturday. Rodney, who is originally from St. Lucia and lives in Estate Two Williams, is being held without bail at the Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility.
