Update: Officer Shot at St. Croix Hospital in Stable Condition

The St. Croix police officer shot Monday during a scuffle with an attempted suicide victim is currently in stable condition at Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital, but hospital staff could not say Tuesday when he would be released.
The attempted suicide victim, a 22-year-old male who had apparently slit his wrists, shot the officer after police picked him up at his home in Estate St. John and dropped him off at the hospital. While in one of the treatment rooms, the man grabbed for the officer’s service weapon and fired a single shot that entered through the officer’s hand and then lodged in his leg, according to a recent VIPD news release. (For more information on Monday’s incident, see link at story’s end.)
When contacted Tuesday, hospital spokeswoman Wendy Shaeffer said the officer was admitted to the hospital soon after the incident occurred, and was recovering from treatment Tuesday afternoon.
The attempted suicide patient will be evaluated by medical doctors to determine his mental state. Charges are pending against the man.
