Man Charged With Impaired Driving After Accident at DUI Checkpoint

St. Thomas police were on the lookout for drunken drivers early Saturday morning when a motorist ran through their traffic checkpoint and smashed into two parked patrol cars, according to the V.I. Police Department.

The driver, Andrew Park of Cabrita Point, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol at about 1 a.m. Saturday.

The collision occurred as officers were conducting a DUI traffic checkpoint on the Nicholas “Nick” Friday Drive near the National Park. The police vehicles were parked in the same area off the roadway.

Park, 35, was driving a 2010 Jeep Commander, traveling west at a high rate of speed, according to police. Just before he arrived at the checkpoint he swerved into the eastbound lane and off the roadway, colliding with the two marked police vehicles, the officers reported.

Officers said Park showed obvious signs of being intoxicated and he was given the Standardized Field Sobriety Test and the Breath Analyzer test. They said he failed both tests and was arrested. His bail was set at $500, which was posted.
