Two V.I. Junior Tennis Players Leave for El Salvador to Play in Tournament

Two Virgin Islands junior tennis players will be leaving on Sunday, July 17, for El Salvador for a week where they will represent the Virgin Islands in an ITF (International Tennis Federation)/COTECC team tournament for age 12-and-under juniors. One of them is Tomas Del Olmo, 11, a native of St. John, who is the son of Alfredo and Veronica Del Olmo. Tomas is coached by his father, Alfredo Del Olmo. The other is Alec Kuipers, 10, is a native of St. Croix, who is the son of Anton and Kelly Kuipers. Alec is coached by Robert Nuscher and Kevin Motta, The travelling coach is Alfredo Del Olmo.
They have played four local tournaments to earn their position as No. 1 and No. 2 in the 12-and-under boys division, qualifying them to attend.
The tournament is played with the Davis Cup format. Each event will be played with two singles and one doubles, and the competition format will be a combination of round robin followed by main draw and a consolation draw. The tournament is supported by the Grand Slam Development Fund and hosted by the Salvadorian Tennis Federation.
“The boys have worked very hard all year training for this event. I am very proud of them. They are fierce competitors, but friends and gentlemen. I am proud of how they not only graciously represent the sport of tennis but also the Virgin Islands,” said Coach Del Olmo.
The invited nations are: Netherlands Antilles, Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Costa Rica, Granada, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Puerto Rico, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Surinam, Trinidad & Tobago, St. Lucia, US Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands and El Salvador (host).
