The Department of Agriculture’s Division of Forestry has begun a seed distribution program in partnership with Universal Pictures’ movie, “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax,” the International House of Pancakes (IHOP) restaurants and the U.S. Forest Service. The St. Croix-based initiative offers residents free tree seeds as part of a public awareness campaign to encourage environmental stewardship, according to a press release issued Monday by the V.I. Department of Agriculture.
As part of the promotion, VIDOA’s Forestry Division is encouraging residents to pick up free tree seeds on a first-come, first-served basis from March 12 through March 30, on St. Croix. Seeds may be picked up at the Department of Agriculture’s main office on St. Croix on Queen Mary Highway.
According to Marilyn Chakroff, Forest Stewardship Program coordinator VIDOA, “The national goal of planting three million trees throughout the country is an excellent one. We are pleased to participate in this exciting initiative and recommend planting trees as an important measure in preserving our natural environment now and for future generations.”
