Detectives from the Major Crime unit are seeking the community’s help in identifying and capturing the person or persons who gunned down Akil Abdul Jamal Braffit just before midnight Friday, the V.I. Police Department said.

Braffit was shot and killed in Estate Williams Delight, according to the police, who reported details of the crime Thursday. It was the eighth homicide on St. Croix since the beginning of the year, the 19th in the territory.

The 911 dispatcher received a call reporting gunshots at 11:51 and a second call requesting emergency medical service at 11:57.

According to the police report, officers at the scene found Braffit outside a Williams Delight residence. He was unresponsive. Police said an unknown person or persons fired several shots at the victim. Medical personnel on the scene said the victim had no vital signs.

The victim was later identified as the 25-year-old Braffit.
