System Likely to Bring High Surf, a Little Wind and Rain by Mid-Week

A weather system moving through the Bahamas over the weekend is likely to bring high surf warnings and a little wind and rain to the U.S. Virgin Islands by mid-week, but islanders can still afford to be a little smug as they watch news reports of frozen highways in the north and view Facebook photos of their stateside friends shoveling snow.

According to the U.S. Weather Service in San Juan, Puerto Rico, a strong cold front pushing across the Bahamas through Sunday will arrive in the Caribbean by mid-week. It will be winds to about 20 to 30 mph late Wednesday and Thursday morning. The system may also bring a little light rain, the weather service said, a "pulse" of weather Wednesday, and a second early Thursday.

Of greater concern is the likelihood that the winds will create rip currents and high-surf conditions, according to the NWS, making a high-surf warning mid-week likely.

Temperatures will probably dip slightly, into the low 80s Wednesday and Thursday, with the overnight low near but probably not below 70. This will be satisfying to those in the islands watching their northern friends on the Weather Channel.
