The Virgin Islands Port Authority’s (VIPA) Board of Governors has amended its marine tariff to address safety concerns regarding limited storage space, an increase in cargo activity and storage of flammable material at the Crown Bay Sandfill on St. Thomas.

The board amended “Section III J. Demurrage and Free Time” in the authority’s marine tariff at its meeting on June 20. Free storage time at the Sandfill is now limited to 12 hours for petroleum-based products and hazardous materials, and 24 hours for general cargo.

The public is invited to a hearing at 6 p.m., July 12, to discuss the change to the tariff. The hearing will be held in the Crown Bay Center Conference Room at the Austin “Babe” Monsanto Marine Terminal, 161-A Sub Base, St. Thomas.

The meeting will also be available via teleconference in VIPA’s conference room on the second floor of the Henry E. Rohlsen Airport Terminal on St. Croix.

For more information, contact VIPA’s Public Information Officer Monifa Brathwaite at 774-1629 or info@viport.com.
