Stanley S. Jones

The Virgin Islands Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) has announced the selection of Stanley S. Jones, a native of St. Thomas and a resident of St. Croix, as the new ESGR chair for the U.S. Virgin Islands, according to a press release issued Wednesday by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD).

The chair is an official DoD volunteer position. Jones will take an oath of office during a formal swearing-in ceremony in November. He will serve under with the assistant secretary of defense for reserve affairs. The position carries a three-year term and is the equivalent of a military two-star officer under DoD protocol.

Jones will provide leadership and vision for a team of dedicated state volunteers spread across the U.S. Virgin Islands. A team he would like to see grow.

“The committee welcomes anyone interested in becoming a member. It is always in need of more dedicated volunteers, especially on St. Thomas where we want to expand outreach,” said Jones.

Jones is currently a retired lieutenant colonel of the Virgin Islands National Guard. He has a Masters in Accounting and Taxation from Long Island University, Brooklyn, New York. He also has a long and distinguished record of association with numerous community volunteer organizations that include the Advisory Council-Strategic Prevention Framework-Partnership for Success at the Department of Health, the V.I. Humanities Council, the Finest Pan Fest Inc., Frederiksted Health Care Inc., the National Guard Association of the US, V.I. National Guard Association and the Methodist Church, St. Croix Circuit Inc.

“The patriotic support of America’s employers and the employees they share with the United States ensures the viability of the all-volunteer force, and thus U.S. security,” said Jones. “ESGR applauds employers who practice personnel policies that support employee participation in the Guard and Reserve,”

Jones also announces that this year’s nomination period for the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award started Oct. 1 and ends Dec. 31. Jones looks forward to the service members nominating their supportive employer for this most prestigious award.

“This is an exceptional way to recognize your employer for going above and beyond the requirements of the Unformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA),” he said.

With almost half of the United States military force serving in the Guard or Reserve, Jones will have a direct impact on these men and women, and their civilian employers.

Jones joins 53 other chairs who oversee the ESGR mission in the 50 states, three territories and the District of Columbia which make up this great nation.

ESGR’s mission is to foster a national culture where all employers support and value the employment and military service of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States.
