Charlene Abramson Joseph, author of “The Vienna Cake Mystery,” will participate in the 7th Annual African American Children’s Book Fair, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., May 11, at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum in Baltimore, Md. The Book Fair is held each year in May and strives to connect families to high quality books about and for African American children as well as other multicultural populations. Its goal is to foster a love of reading for families by connecting them with renown and emerging authors of children’s books.
Attendees can expect a fun-filled day focused on African American and other ethnicities children’s literature. They will also enjoy readings by authors, illustration workshops, live performances, art activities and an opportunity to purchase hard-to-find titles in the Book Village. Joseph’s book is one of over 30 books that will be featured at the Book Village. She will also read and interact with the children during Storytime Readings segment.
“The Vienna Cake Mystery” is a delightful children’s mystery about forgiveness and a delicious Vienna cake and is centered around local animal characters in the Virgin Islands. The book includes the recipe for the cake, along with other facts about Crucian culture and dazzling artwork by Danica M. David.
Inspired by culture bearer Delta M. Dorsch and growing up in the Frederiksted, St. Croix’s rainforest, Joseph is proud that a V.I. author is represented in this learning event that promotes literacy and multicultural authors. She hopes Virgin Islanders living in the D.C., Maryland and Virginia area will bring their children and grandchildren to participate. The event draws about 1,200 participants.
