A man was killed by gunfire Sunday night in the Savan area of St. Thomas, the V.I. Police Department reported.

The victim was identified as 24-year-old Vernon Rawlins. According to the Source homicide list* it was the 13th homicide on St. Thomas since the beginning of the year, the 24th in the territory.

According to police, at about 9:41 p.m. Sunday the 911 dispatch center received a call of a gunshot victim in the Savan area of St. Thomas. Arriving at the scene, officers found a male individual, subsequently identified as Rawlins, who sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Rawlins was transported to Schneider Regional Medical Center, where he died of his injuries.

The police urged anyone with information regarding the incident to call 911, the Criminal Investigation Bureau at 340-774-2211 ext. 5569, or the anonymous tip service, Crime Stoppers USVI, at 1-800-222-8477 (1-800-222-TIPS).

*The Source homicide list is based on police reports but, unlike the VIPD list and those of some other media, does not include suicides or vehicular homicides, which can cause a difference in the number of incidents.
