Isabelle Schulterbrandt Dies at 88

It is with great sadness that the family of Isabelle Schulterbrandt announces her passing on Thursday, Aug. 6.  She died peacefully at home on St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, at the age of 88.  She was born on Oct. 28, 1931, in Harlem, New York.  She comes from a large family of five sisters and seven brothers.

As a mentor, role model and supporter of people’s dreams, she loved helping those in need. She was a woman of great resolve, beautiful, ambitious, organized and astute. Isabelle also spent many years working part-time for Charley’s trucking (now as Patrick Charles Enterprises) assisting with general accounting needs and was indeed an asset to this organization as well.

She began her government career in 1952 as a clerk-typist at V.I. Corp and transitioned to higher positions with the Department of Public Works Solid Waste Division, special assistant to the deputy commissioner and then to business manager, retiring in 1994.

Isabelle loved the Lord and faithfully attended the Catholic Church.  Her favorite Psalm was No. 23 and her favorite scripture was Isaiah 41:10. She was a kind and loving woman with a genuine spirit that helped everyone.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Ernest Schulterbrandt and Eldra Leona Shackleton-Schulterbrandt; brothers: Wilmot Schulterbrandt, Ernest Schulterbrandt Jr. and Kenneth Schulterbrandt; nephew, Vincent Schulterbrandt; niece, Pauline Schulterbrandt; brother-in-law, William Petersen; and sisters-in-law: Muriel Richardson-Shulterbrandt and Shiela Schulterbrandt.

She is survived by her aunt, Rita Smith; brothers: Irving Shulterbrandt, Franklin Schulterbrandt, Joseph Schulterbrandt and John Schulterbrandt; sisters: Josephine Ottley, Estrelda Schulterbrandt-Petersen, Helen Schulterbrandt, Mercedes Brannigan and Marie Osborne; sisters-in-law: Janet Shulterbrandt, Louise Schulterbrandt, Beverly Schulterbrandt and Barbara Blackman-Schulterbrandt; sons: Vance Francis Jr. Ronald Bonelli and Turhan Berne; daughter, Thesla Berne-Anderson; stepson, Alphonso Berne; stepdaughter, Judith Berne; son-in-law, Wash Anderson; and daughters-in-law: Carol Francis (former) and Carol Frontin-Berne.

She is also survived by grandsons: Wayne Francis, Roland Francis, Eric Francis, Errol Francis, Timothy Francis, James Francis and Turhan Berne Jr.; granddaughters: Caren Sylvester, Cheryl Hartley, Briana Berne-Artis, Brittany Anderson and Aceia Maysonet; great-grandsons: Roland Francis Jr., Kameron Sylvester, Dominic Francis, Andrew Hartley, Tehran Berne and Isiah Maysonet; and great-granddaughters: Shia-L Francis, Aryanna Francis, Epikk Robinson, Yesenia Robinson, Rahja Francis, Ryann Francis, Amber Clark, Kameron Sylvester, Reagan Francis, Aubree Hartley, Aria Hartley, Lyric Francis, T’Nykah Berne, T’Naysia Berne and Eliana Artis.

More survivors are nephews: Gary Shulterbrandt, Kirk Shulterbrandt, Basil Ottley Jr. Ernest Verne Schulterbrandt Jr., Kenneth Schulterbrandt Jr., Kofi Schulterbrandt, Anthony Schulterbrandt, Sean Schulterbrandt, Benjamin Harris, John Schulterbrandt Jr., Zebedee Schulterbrandt, Courtney Jacobs Jr., Kwodwo Brannigan, Kofi Brannigan, Kayode Lewis, Jhamed Babatunde-Bey and Akil Lewis; and nieces: Deborah Shulterbrandt-Andalcio, Kim Shulterbrandt, Carol Shulterbrandt-Thomas, Sandra Shulterbrandt-Hall, Laura Hodge-Chesterfield, Loretta Brathwaite, Linda Huyghue, Charmaine Abioro, Veronica Osifeso Petersen, Lisa Petersen, Hazel Chavez (godchild), Linda Schulterbrandt, Jartu Schulterbrandt, Roslyn McKenzie, Keisha Schulterbrandt, Happy Schulterbrandt Jackson, Kishma Schulterbrandt, Zebiesha Callwood, Monique Jacobs, Celeste Jacobs, Ebonique Jacobs-Espirit and Orisha Osbourne.

Other survivors include special cousins: Gail Schulterbrandt, Winthrop Maduro and Franklin Schulterbrandt Jr.; best friends: Angela Durant, Gloria Hodge and Inez Samuel-Hart; as well as cousins, great-nephews, great-nieces, and other relatives and friends too numerous to mention.  She is also survived by a host of families: Maduro, Sebastien, Gabriel, Phillips, Shackleton and Francis.

Pallbearers: Wayne Francis, Roland Francis, Kofi Brannigan, Kayode Lewis, Brandon Hartley, Kadife Sylvester and Winthrop Maduro. Honorary Pallbearers: Franklin Schulterbrandt, Joseph Schulterbrandt, John Schulterbrandt, Alphonse Berne and Reynold Charles.

The viewing will be held at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 10 a.m., Friday, Aug. 14, at Turnbull’s Funeral Home.  The interment will be at the Western Cemetery No. 1 immediately following the service.
