UVI Welcomes New Head Men’s Basketball Coach The University of the Virgin Islands welcomes Alfonzo Duncan to the University’s Athletics Department, where he will serve as the Head Men’s Basketball Coach and Wellness Center Manager. Duncan brings over 30 years of experience in intercollegiate coaching and athletic administration to the department at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I and II and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) level.

Previously, Duncan served as Director of Athletics and Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Clinton College, Assistant Coach at North Carolina A&T State University, Interim Head Coach and Associate Head Coach at Florida Atlantic University, Assistant Coach at Virginia Tech and Assistant Coach, Associate Athletic Director for Compliance and Director of Student Activities at Livingston College. “I’m elated to get the season underway and mark the beginning of a new era of winning with excellence with UVI Basketball,” said Duncan. “Coach Duncan has an incredible track record spanning over 30 years, matched by his ability to recruit and build championship-caliber basketball programs of integrity and character,” said Dr. Jerel Drew, UVI Athletics Director. “He brings a new level of energy and passion that will attribute to the success of our men’s basketball program on the court, in the classroom and the community,” said Drew.

UVI Communication Students Establish the First NABJ Student Chapter in the Caribbean The University of the Virgin Islands Communication Department students have founded the University of the Virgin Islands Association of Black Journalists (UVIABJ) student chapter, becoming the first student and only NABJ affiliate chapter in the Caribbean. At its annual October meeting, the executive board of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) made a unanimous decision to officially grant UVIABJ chapter status. NABJ is committed to strengthening ties among Black journalists, sensitizing all media to the importance of fairness in the workplace for Black journalists, and expanding job opportunities and recruiting activities for veteran, young and aspiring Black journalists, just to name a few.

UVIABJ joins 883 professional and student journalists from 11 states and 33 student chapters as part of Region III of NABJ. “Welcome to the NABJ family,” said Dorothy Tucker, NABJ president. “We are thrilled to have our first NABJ chapter from the USVI and ‘tickled black’ it’s a group of young aspiring journalists.”

UVI Closed for Veterans Day on November 11 The University of the Virgin Islands will be close on Wednesday, Nov. 11, in commemoration of the Veterans Day holiday.

Administrative offices and classes will resume at its regular scheduled time on Thursday, Nov. 12.

The V.I. Society of Certified Public Accountants (CPA) Announces Minority Scholarship The Virgin Islands Society of Certified Public Accountants (VISCPA) minority scholarship is now open for the 2021-2022 academic year. Scholarship awards range from $3,000 to $5,000.

An eligible applicant must be an undergraduate or graduate student at UVI majoring in accounting and must be of an ethnic minority.

Back to Better Project Initiate Mental Health Wellbeing Online Course UVI Counseling Services is offering a new option for supporting mental health wellbeing this year. The course is from EVERFI –Back to Better Project.

This course will help students understand more about mental health wellbeing especially in times of COVID-19 impacts; what comprises mental health and how to attain, maintain, and sustain better mental health well-being.

The Counseling Office hopes that students will take advantage of this course. It is free, interactive and brief.

Counselors are available to discuss any questions you may have about the Back to Better Project and Mental Health Well-being Course.

UVI BSW Studies Career Fair Day to be held on November 10 Via ZOOM The University of the Virgin Islands Bachelor’s Social Work Studies (UVI BSW) invites the community and students interested in learning more about social workers and social work career to attend the BSW Virtual Career Fair day from 5 – 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 10, via ZOOM.  This event serves both the St. Thomas and the St. Croix Campuses specifically gear towards high school seniors, college freshmen and community members.

The event will provide students and community members with information regarding internships in the field of Social Work as well as showcase the resources that are available from our social services providers.

The BSW is a Bachelor of Social Work Studies that trains individuals with the skills necessary to provide social services. Students and community members will learn about the UVI BSW studies and how to bridge the gap with our Virgin Islands communities.

Call for Poster Artists – Date Extended to November 13, 2020 The Agriculture and Food Fair of the U.S. Virgin Islands Inc. is now accepting art submissions for its 2021 AgriFest poster. Whether an individual is a world-famous or an aspiring artist, seize the opportunity to represent the February 2021 event and the 50th anniversary of AgriFest. The chosen artwork will be showcased to promote over 10 multi-disciplinary events. A panel of judges consisting of AgriFest board members will review submissions and select the artwork that best reflects the look and feel of the 2021 agricultural expo and its 50th season.

The selected poster artwork becomes the exclusive property of AgriFest and will be the icon for AgriFest 2021 event and related activities. The winning artist will be contracted at $1,500 and will receive 50 posters from AgriFest for the sole purpose of promoting the artist’s work.

The poster should reflect the theme of 2021 AgriFest: “Agriculture 2021: A Golden Opportunity to Grow.” Please refrain from depicting carbonated beverages, weapons or any alcohol products in the artwork.

The extended deadline for all entries is 5 p.m. on Nov. 13.

There is a need to submit the printed poster by Nov. 13, 2020, it will be used for the final artwork to market the event as the official poster of Agrifest 2021.

Poster Submission Details

Your poster should be in portrait orientation and the dimensions should be 18” x 24”.

There is NO limit to the number of posters an individual may submitted. Once the winning submission is selected, the artwork becomes the property of the Agriculture and Food Fair of the U.S. Virgin Islands, Inc.

Can I sell my poster submission?

No. Once the winning submission is selected, the artwork becomes the property of the Agriculture and Food Fair of the U.S. Virgin Islands, Inc.

The following schedule:

  • Submissions: Oct. 5, through Nov. 13, 5 p.m. (US EST)
  • Announcement of the winners: January 2021.
