V.I. Farmers Alliance to Hold Research Outreach Farm Field Day on February 25

United States Department of Agriculture

The Virgin Islands Farmers Alliance (VIFA), a domestic Virgin Islands non-profit run by some of the territory’s most productive professional crop farmers, invites all community and media members interested in local agriculture to attend its research outreach Farm Field Day, which is sponsored by the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA’s) Southern Sustainable Agriculture and Education (SARE) producer grant program.

There will be an open vegetable market, a farm tour of New Breed Farm, and a presentation detailing the research that has taken place over the last three years on four local farms with 42 varieties of cucumber, tomato, carrots, lettuce and watermelon. New Breed Farm is located .25 miles west of the Ag Fairgrounds in the community gardens on the corner of Centerline and Paradise Roads.

The times are 8 -11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 25

Schedule:

8 a.m. – vegetable market (8-11 a.m.) opens

9 a.m. – Farm Tour (lots to see!)

10 a.m. – Presentation on “What vegetable seed varieties to grow in the VI.”
