Emergency responders found a 9-year-old girl dead on St. Thomas early Friday, police said Saturday. The nature of the death and where exactly the girl died are still under investigation by the Virgin Islands Police Department.

Police said emergency medical technicians concluded the girl had no vital signs when found on Rumer Road near the Vitraco Mall at 5:22 a.m. — at odds with reports on social media that had the girl drowning in Charlotte Amalie harbor.

Further information was scant as the investigation continued. By late Saturday, police said they had a person of interest in the death after conducting interviews. Police said they were “investigating the suspicious circumstances.”

According to Police the cause of death is unknown pending an autopsy.
