Fremont Elwood Canton Dies at 90

Fremont Elwood Canton

Fremont Elwood Canton, also known as “Elwood,” of Estate Mon Bijou died on March 25. He was 90 years old.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Inez Roebuck-Canton; father, Fidelis Alexander Canton Sr.; brothers: Vincent Roebuck, Melvin, Douglas, Oliver, Fidelis Jr., Mario and Eric Canton; and stepson, Denfield Rock

He is survived by his spouse, Rose “Ruth” Canton; daughters: Patrice and Desni Canton; sons: Elwood (Woody), Lauritz (Vac), Devon (Dev), Roy (Royie) and Wilfred (Freddy) Canton; stepchildren: Paulette Krauser, Laurely K. Lynch, Sherman (Butch) Brannigan, Eladie Jacobs, James Rock; and grandchildren: Ronel and Ronique Burke, Ronae Burke-Cordero, Ramon Peguero, Dwayne, Shawn, Kedra Canton and Coretta Canton-Richards, Lereiz, Malakai, Laquasha, Roy Jr., Akeil, Anthony (Tony), Devin and Akeno (Keno) Canton.

He is also survived by great-grandchildren: Kyrone, Kyrell, Kyraun, Kylani and Zidane Burke, Kyon Gonsales, Kyneil Anderson, Ky’JuNae Brewster, Ky’Nai Christian, Zayden McFarlande, Ky’Mahni, Ky’Mahri and Ky’Zahni Peguero, Tajarie McIntosh, Nicosi and Nyzada Canton, Ish’Mahayla and Maasai Richards, Akeil Jr., Roy III, Mateo, Josiah and Neriyah Canton; daughters-in-law: Sandra Tonge-Canton and Atia James-Canton; and sisters: Inez Canton-Sewer and Roselyn Canton-Lang.

He is also survived by sisters-in-law: Pauline, Jean, Iris, Agatha and Elaine Canton, Rhenita Desola, Alvilda Branch, Myrtle Clarke, Roselyn Galloway, Yvonne Huntt-Liburd, Leatrice Harris, Dorabelle Davila, Claudia Lake, Maria Francis, Dana Lake-Streams, Winifred Sweeney, Joycelyn Darius and Jizelle Kelsick; brothers-in-law: Ray Sewer Sr. and Clinton Lang Sr., Eustace, Eon and Trevor Lake; nieces: Jurene Thomas, Denise Canton, Dinah Canton-Johnson, Leone Denise Jackson, Renee, Chandell, Sharon, Brenda Canton, Lureen Canton-Jarvis, Diane Canton-Reed, Ellajean Canton-Forbes, Melanie Canton-Suarez, Jacqueline Canton, Nicole Canton-Neal, Ida Sewer-Pedersen, Irene and Yvette Sewer; and nephews: David, Douglas Jr. Danny, Devin, Robert, Jeffrey, Michael, Kasey, Alan, Delroy, Mario, Raymond, O’Neil, Reuben, Jimmy, Curtis, and Melvin Canton Jr., Jason and John Bell Jr., Ray Jr., Rodney and Ronald Sewer, and Everick Phillips.

The viewing will be held at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 15, at Way of the Cross Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Kingshill Cemetery.
