Donnie M. King, a St. Thomas native and graduate of All Saints Cathedral School, has been recognized as one of America’s Most Influential Lawyers for 2024 by Savoy magazine – an honor that’s not just a professional accolade, but a reflection of his journey from the Virgin Islands to becoming a prominent trial lawyer with Akerman LLP.

In a recent interview with the Source, King said his path has been fueled by his deep-rooted connection to his island upbringing and a passion for making a difference in the legal world.

At 36, King has built a national reputation for handling high-stakes cases, most notably a $30 million jury verdict in a breach of contract case this year. His practice focuses on complex commercial litigation across a variety of industries, including aviation, healthcare, and manufacturing. But King’s drive comes not just from winning cases—he finds purpose in the work itself and the opportunities it provides to positively impact others.

“My upbringing in the Virgin Islands gave me a strong sense of community and determination,” King said. “I carry that with me in everything I do.”

A typical day for King starts early at home, where family life is his top priority. “My day begins by getting my daughter dressed, making her breakfast, and taking her to school,” King shared. “It’s the highlight of my day.”

After his morning routine with his wife Vanessa and their two young children, Maya and Donnie Jr., King heads into the office. His workweek often stretches to 50-60 hours, filled with client meetings, court hearings, and strategy sessions. Despite the long hours, King is committed to maintaining a strong work-life balance, involving his family in his professional world whenever possible. “They fly with me to conferences, client meetings, and sometimes court hearings,” he said, emphasizing how important it is to stay connected.

Beyond the legal practice, King is also passionate about using his platform to promote diversity and inclusion within the legal profession. As a council member of Akerman’s Racial Justice Initiative, King plays a key role in efforts to address structural racism and support marginalized communities through pro bono work and philanthropic efforts.

“Our mission is to foster transparency and hold those who perpetuate racism accountable,” King explained. His leadership in this initiative reflects his broader commitment to creating lasting change, both in and outside the courtroom.

King’s success has not come without challenges, but he is quick to credit his family, particularly his wife, for their support. “Vanessa is my rock,” King said. “She deserves every bit of the praise that I receive. I wouldn’t be able to do what I do without her.” This partnership has been key to managing the demands of his career while ensuring that his family remains at the center of his life.

The recognition from Savoy magazine is a significant milestone in King’s career, but he remains focused on the future.

“I am honored to receive this recognition and grateful to my family and the Virgin Islands community that raised me,” he said. However, he views it as a step in a larger journey—one that includes giving back to the community that shaped him. King hopes to inspire young Virgin Islanders to pursue their dreams, no matter how distant they may seem.
