A St. Thomas woman was arrested Friday after police said she assaulted an officer who was responding to multiple fights during the St. John Celebration J’ouvert event in Cruz Bay.

According to a Virgin Islands Police Department police report, Carla Jeffers was arrested at about 8:30 a.m. July 3 and charged with aggravated assault and battery upon an officer, interfering with an officer discharging her duties and disturbing the peace; fighting.

Police said officers were attempting to control a disorderly crowd and prevent additional fights in the vicinity of the Lumber Yard when Jeffers allegedly pulled away from and pushed an officer while yelling loudly.

According to the police report, officers attempted to gain control of Jeffers, but she continued swinging her arms and allegedly struck an officer. Police said she was given verbal commands to step back but continued her actions before she was handcuffed and taken into custody.

Jeffers’ bail was set at $1,000, which was later posted, according to police. Her advice of rights hearing was scheduled for Monday in Superior Court.
