YOU CAN MAIL TAX RETURNS 'TIL MIDNIGHT APRIL 15

April 1, 2003 – The countdown has started for the annual rush to file income tax returns. They must be postmarked by midnight April 15 to comply with Bureau of Internal Revenue law.
Thanks to late hours to be kept by the U.S. Postal Service, procrastinators will have until midnight April 15 to mail their returns at one post office each on St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John. Those post offices are the ones at Sugar Estate, Kingshill and Cruz Bay, respectively.
All mail deposited in the collection boxes located outside these post offices by midnight will be postmarked April 15, V.I. Postmaster Louis A. Jackson promised.
Jackson said tax filers should include their correct return address and affix sufficient postage.
Post Office service counters will close at the normal time, but late mailers will be able to buy stamps from vending machines in the post office mailbox areas.
For your basic letter, "to be on the safe side, put on two stamps," Jackson advised, referring to 37-cent stamps. Those mailing bulkier envelopes will be able to weigh them on scales by the vending machines at all three post offices and determine the postage needed.
For more information, call 774-1950 on St. Thomas, 778-0199 on St. Croix or 779-4227 on St. John.
