March 10, 2003 – More than a hundred young people took part in the first annual Peacemakers Youth Soccer Club Fun 5-a-Side Tournament,according to a release.
A total of 98 children registered in four age groups (6 & under, 8 & under, 10 & under, 13 & under) and played on coed teams at all levels in the Feb. 22 tournament at the Lionel Roberts Stadium.
There were also eight players in the 15 & under age group, for a total of 106 children. Most of these 15 & under players assisted during the day as referees, scorers and linesmen. This coed team played a "mixed" game against coaches and adult soccer players (male and female) at the end of the tournament in a full field competitive game.
Teams, coaches, and results:
6 & under – 2 teams – a total of 14 players.
1st – Antilles Shredders, coached by Stephen Brusch.
2nd – Montessori team, coached by Adalio Araujo, assisted by Bob Stolz.
8 & under – 3 teams; 23 players total.
1st – Montessori, coached by Adalio Araujo.
2nd – Antilles, coached by Art Egger.
3rd – Kirwan/Dober, coached by Mr. Braithwaite and Mr. Henley. This team included several first-time soccer players.
10 & under – Total of 28 players, 2 divisions: Division 1 – players with some experience (3 teams) and Division 2 – first-time players, many playing in their first tournament (2 teams).
Division 1:
1st – Antilles Young Runners, coached by Franklyn Victor and assisted by Pam
Carpenter.
2nd – Montessori, coached by Adalio Araujo.
3rd – Antilles Red Strikers, coached by Shep Barrows.
Division 2:
1st – Kirwan, coached by Mr. Braithwaite and Coach Williams.
2nd – Dober, coached by Mr. Henley and Coach Williams.
13 & under – Total of 33 players registered; 4 teams, including two from the Peacemakers Youth Soccer Club and a combined team with players from Dober Elementary and Montessori schools.
Originally divided into two groups to accommodate the late registration of a team from the Calvary Baptist Tigers, the games were adjusted on tournament day, not some players failed to show up, and there was only one division.
