Cycling Results: Bumann Crushes the Elite Field

March 18, 2008 – While preparing to compete in the Tour of Flanders in Belgium next month, Robert Bumann clocks many long, intense hours on his bike each week, and his training is certainly paying off. His victory in Sunday's forty-mile cycling race, The South Shore Road Race, was just a reward for his hard work and preparation. He finished in 1:42:41, more than 6 minutes ahead of second place finisher John Riggs. Juancito Gario was third.
The Expert field, racing 27 miles, had a fast and furious finish. Spectators screamed with excitement as the entire field approached the finish line en-masse. James Meyers earned his first-ever win in the Expert category. Dale Scope and Dwight Sergeant finished second and third respectively.
The large Sport field raced 14 miles on an out-and-back course. Though a bit sluggish and unorganized at the start, the race began to take shape at the halfway mark. In the final stretch Marius Modeste powered his way to the finish line to grab the gold. Mathias Sampson was second, and UVI student Chris Cockrell was third.
Women cyclists also braved the wind and hills of the 14-mile course. Sara Gambee demonstrated true pedal power as she blazed to first place in 51:23. Darynnette Acevedo was second and Michelle Dizon was third.
The next cycling race, the Three-Person Time Trial, is scheduled for March 30. For more information, call 773-8456.
