Jan. 21, 2008 — Five St. Thomas men entered pleas in Magistrate's Court in Road Town Monday on weapons and drug charges, BVI police said.
Zebedee Callwood Schulterbrant and John Alexander Schulterbrant pleaded not guilty to charges of unlawful possession of a 9 mm handgun, explosives (bullets) and possession of 79 grams of cannabis with intent to distribute, said Inspector Jefferson Knight, the government prosecutor.
Rasheed Lewis and Makebo Pickering pleaded not guilty to illegal possession of a 9 mm handgun and bullets, possession of cannabis with intent to distribute and possession of smaller amounts of marijuana.
Clifton Johnson pleaded guilty to possession of a 40-caliber handgun and bullets. Johnson also pleaded guilty to simple possession of 1.2 grams of cocaine and simple possession of 79 grams of cannabis. He pleaded not guilty to charges that he intended to sell the marijuana, Knight said.
The men were arrested Thursday in Road Town, when police pulled over the rental car they were driving. Police allegedly found a handgun in the glove compartment and another under the driver's seat. They also discovered bullets in the men's pockets and a key to a local hotel. Police found the drugs at the hotel, Knight said.
All five men were remanded to Her Majesty's Prison after the hearing. Johnson is scheduled to be sentenced Wednesday, Knight said.
