Florence Williams Library Gives Summer Reading Program Awards

The Florence Williams Public Library Summer Reading Program Awards and Showcase will be held at 5:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 7, in the little theater on the 2nd floor at the library, according to a press release from the Department of Planning and Natural Resources: Division of Libraries, Archives and Museums.

The library staff along with the assistance of the Friends of the St. Croix Public Libraries and many volunteers has enriched the literacy, artistic and cultural lives of 30 children in grades 1-8 in this year’s summer reading program, which began June 29. Each child was given a customized fun and educational work booklet developed specifically for the summer reading program.

This year’s theme was “Cultural Connection,” and the children not only completed booklets with activities and the recommended reading list, but the children also learned how to identify a book by title, author, illustrator/s, publisher and copyright date. They also learned how to use the public library and its resources. They read books, participated in book discussions, and wrote at least a one-page book report. One child read an astonishing 13 books in just the first four weeks of the six week program.
Staff and volunteers worked as a team to teach, arts, crafts and cultural programs to the children, who also went on a field trip and tour of Government House.
