Low Fuel Pushes St. Thomas Outages into Thursday, Shipment Expected Sunday

St. Thomas residents faced another major power outage on Wednesday, starting in the late afternoon and lasting past midnight for most areas. Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority crews worked throughout the day to identify and address the issue.

An explanation for the outage arrived around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, attributing the problem to low fuel pressure, which affected Unit 23. According to WAPA spokesperson Shanell Petersen, this low pressure caused operational issues with the unit and resulted in gas leaks. WAPA teams prioritized repairs to address the leaks.

A fuel shipment is expected on Sunday, July 21. While WAPA anticipates Unit 23 returning to service before then, the ongoing low fuel pressure issue could lead to further disruptions. Additionally, Unit 15 is scheduled to be offline on Thursday, July 18, for unrelated repairs.

WAPA is advising residents to stay informed about potential updates through their official channels.
