St. Croix Man in Custody With Domestic Violence Charges

Officers were dispatched to a residence in Strawberry Hill Friday following reports of an assault, the V.I. Police Department reported.

At about 8:05 p.m., members of the Criminal Investigation Bureau responded and made contact with an adult female who reported Stephen Gonzales assaulted her, the police report stated.

The victim stated as she was doing the dishes, Gonzales grabbed her by the back of her neck and began punching her in the head, at which time she began to fight back. He wrapped his right arm around her neck tightly to the point where she could not breathe, and he continued punching her in the head and face. She was able to break free from Gonzales, left the house, and ran to her neighbor’s house to call 911, according to the report.

Gonzales, 38 years old, was taken into custody and charged with assault in the second degree (DV). No bail was set until Gonzales appeared in court before a judge. He was transported to the Wilbur H. Francis Command Police Station, where he was booked. He was remanded to the John Bell Correctional Facility pending his advice of rights hearing.
