IN 'STEALING HARVARD,' THE PLOT IS ACADEMIC

0
Sept. 26, 2002 – With a title like "Stealing Harvard," it surely can't be all bad. You've got to admit, it gets your attention.
Maybe the movie folks should have stolen Yale; if some of the critics are right, they couldn't have done worse. Well, here we go. The title derives in a fittingly plebeian way: John (Jason Lee who was super as the lead singer in "Almost Famous") is all set to marry his girlfriend Elaine (Leslie Mann) and treat her to a $29,000 wedding, when suddenly he is confronted with a debt he contracted long ago to put his niece through college, ergo the title. Elaine somehow has settled on the $29,000 figure to set up housekeeping, including the wedding.
His no-good pal Duff (Tom Green) convinces our hero that the only way out of his dilemma is to embark on a life of crime, which involves much farce and fumble. So far, the movie could be salvageable, but don't bet your schoolbooks on it just yet.
According to Roger Ebert, the movie is "about as lax and limp a comedy as I've seen in a while, a meander through worn-out material."
But let's stop — remember, even a blind pig roots an acorn sometimes. And Chris Hewitt of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution thinks he has rooted one here. He says the plot "barely matters," something Ebert would second. What matters, Hewitt says, is the movie's "strong cast and clever script."
So, grab your popcorn and take your options. Directed by Bruce McCulloch, "Stealing Harvard" is rated, oh dear, PG-13 for crude and sexual humor, language and drug references.
It is playing at Sunny Isle Theaters.

REGULATIONS TO BE POSTED AT GARBAGE SITES

0
Sept. 26, 2002 – Public Works Commissioner Wayne Callwood said his department is posting signs at St. Croix garbage dumpsters to notify residents what types of solid waste are acceptable at the sites.
The signs state that no dumping of industrial or business waste is allowed at the garbage bins. Also forbidden are construction materials, large household appliances, hazardous materials, animals, oil, fuel, other flammables, fencing materials, furniture, metals, and wood or brush over 24 inches.
Debris that cannot be dumped at the bins is accepted at the landfill, Callwood said.
"The notice also states that violators will be prosecuted and may be fined up to $1,000," he said, adding that litter enforcement officers will be patrolling the bin sites, issuing citations to anyone violating the dumping laws.
For more information, contact John Green, senior solid waste coordinator at Public Works, at 773-1290 ext. 2218.

PUBLIC WORKS CONTINUES GOLDEN ROCK REPAIRS

0
Sept. 26, 2002 – Public Works Commissioner Wayne Callwood said the department has completed repairs to the sewer line in the Golden Rock area, and more repairs are on the way.
"Approximately 450 feet of concrete piping was replaced with 12-inch PVC piping from the area of LBJ to Harbor View Apartments," Callwood said. Blocked connectors for two residential pipe lines were also replaced, he said.
Ongoing repairs include running more of the PVC piping in the area to improve the flow into the manhole, Callwood said. "It is anticipated that this work will be completed within three weeks," he said, adding that the department would continue utilizing "chlorine and deodorizer to control the odor and disinfect the area until the problem is resolved."
Callwood asked that Golden Rock residents and motorists use caution in the area and to adhere to posted traffic barriers.

GOVERNOR APPROVES EDA BENEFIT APPLICATIONS

0
Sept. 26, 2002 – Under the newly revised Economic Development Authority, Gov. Charles W. Turnbull has approved 11 new applications for economic development benefits. The governor also granted an extension of benefits to one other company.
"This is a continuous effort on the part of this administration to promote the territory as business-friendly," Turnbull said, noting that of the 12 companies, nine are located on St. Croix.
Turnbull said these companies bring a variety of businesses to the islands, including inter-island ferry services, construction and operation of a five-star hotel/convention center, acquisitions of mortgage and home equity loans for sale in the secondary market, operation of various lottery schemes, and consulting services to clients outside the U.S. Virgin Islands.
"With these additional companies, I have approved over 60 new companies within the last two years, with the majority being located on St. Croix," Turnbull said.
The 12 companies represent a total investment of more than $114 million in the territory and will employ an estimated 450 people, with an annual salary total of approximately $12.3 million.
A list of the approved businesses was not released from Government House, with the reason given that the businesses themselves had not yet been notified.
