EPA Withdraws One Limetree Refinery Permit Pending Appeals

The Environmental Protection Agency withdrew a controversial permit for the Limetree Bay refinery on Thursday, while appeals are worked out. The refinery will continue to operate, but for the time being, loses some leeway in emissions for its other permits.

Environmental Groups and Limetree Refinery Both Challenging Terms of Refinery Permit

Several environmental groups filed an appeal this week to contest St. Croix's Limetree Bay Refinery's pollution limit permit from the Environmental Protection Agency for being too lenient. Meanwhile, the refinery is contesting it, arguing it is too strict.

Limetree Bay has started up part of the former Hovensa refinery on St. Croix and begun production and commercial sales of refined products, the company announced on Monday.

There was a larger than usual flame at the top of the Limetree Bay Refinery's flare stack and louder than usual noise from the flare over the last week, which the company says is part of the normal startup process and will quiet down when the refinery restarts.

Limetree Executives Hold Meet and Greet at Open House

About 150 people had a chance to meet top executives of Limetree Bay Terminals and Refinery during an open house Saturday at the University of the Virgin Islands' Great Hall. Outside, one of the corporation’s boats and several fire engines were on display.

Company: Limetree Bay On Schedule to Start Refining

A portion of the former Hovensa refinery on St. Croix is on schedule to resume refining oil by year's end, according to Limetree Bay Ventures, parent company of Limetree Bay Terminals and Limetree Bay Refining.
