TIME RUNNING OUT TO APPLY FOR HIV PREVENTION GRANTS

Approximately $400,000 for HIV/AIDS prevention could be lost if agencies in the territory don't act quickly.
The American Red Cross is looking for other health and social services groups to partner with them to apply to the Centers for Disease Control for grant money to support HIV/AIDS prevention efforts. The grant applications are due May 7.
Joe Elmore, chapter manager for the Red Cross, said Friday the announcement was made late by CDC which didn't leave much time to write the very complicated grants.
"These grants are very involved and agencies that are functioning with one or two staff just don't have time or the resources to complete them," Elmore told Radio One.
There is $400,000 in grant money earmarked for the Virgin Islands, according to the release from the Red Cross. There will be two or three grants given that will not exceed $200,000 each.
Elmore said, "We at the Red Cross in St. Thomas and St. John are submitting a proposal and would like any group interested in collaborating to fax us a preliminary letter of intent to collaborate, including a basic outline of how you envision our working together."
Faxes can be sent to Pat Odoms, health and safety coordinator, or to Elmore at 777-5895. They must be received no later than Monday, May 3.
