LAGOON STREET BINS TO STAY IN PLACE 30 MORE DAYS

July 31, 2001 – Frederiksted residents have gotten a 30 day reprieve to find alternatives to the Lagoon Street garbage bins that had been scheduled for removal Tuesday.
Earlier in July Public Works Commissioner Wayne Callwood announced the roll-on, roll-off bins at the Lagoon Street trash site would be removed July 31, however in a release Tuesday he said due to the number of appeals made to his office he would give residents another 30 days to make "the necessary arrangements to properly dispose of their garbage."
In particular Callwood said people living in La Grange, Prosperity, Hams Bluff and surrounding areas had asked for more time to find alternatives.
In his earlier release Callwood had said Paradise Waste Systems was collecting garbage house-to-house in the neighborhoods surrounding the Lagoon Street site.
Callwood said Tuesday he didn't mind giving extension if it meant "the streets of Frederiksted are not overflowing with garbage."
However, he said, on August 30 the bins will be removed and the area closed off. He said Public Works will keep residents informed about alternate garbage disposal sites.
