FLIGHT SCHEDULES TO V.I. NORMAL, AIRLINES SAY

Nov. 12, 2001 – Airline officials reported that flight schedules to the Virgin Islands were normal Monday afternoon, hours after an American Airlines flight to Santo Domingo crashed shortly after taking off from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.
But the officials urged people with travel plans to reconfirm their flights to make sure they are still flying on schedule.
"Everything is normal here," Minette Velez, a spokeswoman for American Airlines in San Juan, said early Monday afternoon. "As of now, everything should be normal."
A USAirways flight scheduled to arrive on St. Thomas at 3:20 p.m. from Philadelphia was also on schedule, according to airline personnel.
All United Airlines flights were back on schedule except those going into and out of Kennedy Airport in New York, according to an announcement on the company's website.
The daily American Airlines flight from Kennedy to St. Thomas had already left New York at the time of the disaster, Velez said. That flight arrived as normal, she said. The flight, scheduled to depart Cyril E. King Airport at 2:45 p.m., actually took off about an hour later.
JFK remained closed to outbound traffic but opened for incoming flights Monday afternoon, according to network television news reports. La Guardia and Newark, the other two major airports serving the New York City area, reopened about 3 p.m. Virgin Islands time Monday.
Flights scheduled to depart from airports around the nation were immediately grounded in the minutes after the crash Monday morning but were cleared to take off later Monday morning, according to the national media and Internet reports.
