TV MORAVIAN HISTORY FEATURES VIRGIN ISLANDERS

Nov. 12, 2001 – Two Virgin Islanders are featured in a segment of a nationally distributed television series about the history of the Moravian Church that's airing on WTJX/Channel 12 on Tuesday and Thursday.
The half-hour program, the second in the four-part series "Zinzendorf: Count Without Borders," traces the history of the Moravian Church in the territory, starting in 1732. Interviews with Marilyn Krigger, University of the Virgin Islands history professor, and the Rev. Leon Matthias, superintendent of the Moravian Church, will detail the early mission work of the church on St. Thomas.
The title refers to Count Nikolaus Ludwig Graf von Zinzendoft, a German who in the early 1700s founded a community that evolved into the Moravian Church. The Moravians were pioneers in missionary work, including in the Danish West Indies, where among other things they taught the children of slaves and free blacks in schools.
The show will air at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday and will be repeated at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
On St. Croix, the station advised, viewers can see the program on translator station WO5AW Channel 5 by hooking up to a small outdoor antenna or using a rabbit-ear inside antenna. The remaining two parts of the series will air on the following Tuesdays and Thursdays.
For more background on the series, see the Comenius Foundation web site.
