June 8, 2002 – Police said a car was speeding Friday afternoon when it crashed on St. Croix's East End, ejecting the driver and killing him.
At about 3:23 p.m., the driver, a Caucasian male believed to be in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene after his black Dodge Ram flipped on the driver's side and slid for more than 140 feet on Route 62. The car, headed east from Sally's Fancy toward the Divi Carina Bay Resort and Casino, slammed into a metal guard rail and concrete bridge, police said.
The victim was not using a seat belt, police said. His identity was being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Lt. William Harvey, traffic commander, said damage to the vehicle was minimal. Although the victim "was driving at a very high rate of speed," he said, there was a good chance that "he could have walked out of it" if he had been wearing his seat belt.
